First spotted him/her down by our picnic table - an absolutely beautifaul animal that's such a dark charcoal grey in colour it's almost black against the snow... with this incredibly white, fluffy tip to its tail! Hunting was apparently quite successful and - mouth stuffed full of grass and mice following several 'lunge/dig/gobble' episodes - our baby trotted off towards the tall pines where the eastern boundary of your property meets the shore where it disappeared amongst the underbrush. So perhaps Arnold succeeded in discouraging them from living under his shed with his addition of rocks to their dens. One other observation I found most rewarding: it's extremely windy today (40k+ gusting to 70) and our fox seemed appreciative of the protection afforded by the little stand of trees we planted down by the shore. Feb 21Email from Ruth Lots of activity down by Arnold's these days... that same dark grey fox has been seen hunting, plus another that is reddish taupe with dark legs and this morning a covey of about ten Hungarian partridge hunkered into the drifting snow (and the sun!) in the lee of the new shed. |
