Art Guidelines

Are you interested in drawing me and my friends?

That's wonderful. I love seeing how people draw me in their styles.

On this page, I've collected the various legal issues and guidelines to consider when drawing artwork with me and my friends. If you have any questions, please ask. You will find that I'm very flexible.

Thanks

I want to thank every artist and fan who has been kind and generous to us by working on artwork projects or sending us fan artwork!

I welcome new pictures. In some cases, I may even ask to buy the original artwork.

Oh, by the way, you don't have to limit your drawings to little ol' me. My friends, like Meredith and Ceri, like to have their pictures drawn, too. *smile*

Fan artwork

If you wish to send me fan artwork, please consider the following requests:

Colours. Please pay attention to the colours. All of us have certain colours that are part of our personality. For example, I'm proud of my red hair and I always wear something that is purple in colour.

Nature. Keep in mind our nature and personalities.

Credits. Remember to properly identify me or my friends in the artwork if you decide to share the artwork with other people.

Commissioned artwork

Sometimes I will hire (or commission) an artist to create artwork for my personal enjoyment or to grace the header image spot on my web site. If this is the case, please consider the following requests:

Paid. This is a paid commission. If you agree to work on an image, we will discuss payment terms. Of course, if you wish to volunteer an image, we won't argue. *smile*

Delivery. An estimated completion and delivery schedule should be discussed at the start of the commission. We know the "real world" happens and you will not be bound by this estimate.

Status. We ask that you keep us informed on the commission progress. We believe communications is very important.

Header images

A special category of commissioned artwork are the header images. These are the little pictures that appear at the top of the web pages. From the very beginning, my goal was to have a wide range of interpretations of me shown on the web site to provide a nice variety. If you are invited to work on a header image, please follow these requests:

Background. The artwork must be full colour with background; like the picture Tracy Wagner did above.

Me. Of course, it must feature me. Hey, it is my web site! *hee hee*

Relevant. The artwork should represent, either directly or humourously, the topic of the specific web page.

Media. Any media may be used, including computer colouring. The resulting image will be scanned and reduced to 260 pixels wide, so keep this small size in mind when designing the artwork. A lot of small detail will be lost when reduced to this size.

Copyrights

Unless otherwise specified, commissioned artwork that does not contain me or my friends is the copyright of the artist. However, if the artwork contains me or my friends, then the copyright will be jointly held by the artist and Michael Russell. This is requested because me and my friends are a trademark held by Michael Russell.

Publication

Credits. Any published version of the commission MUST include the following. This even applies if you are just sharing the picture with friends via e-mail or a private area on your web site.

  1. A title or caption.
  2. Identification of the characters and the characters' owner(s).
  3. Appropriate copyright statement.

If you retain the copyright, then use the following example for how the copyright statement should appear: The word "copyright" is optional.

Copyright © 1999 Laura Howell. Artwork commissioned by Michael Russell

If a joint copyright, then use the following example for how the copyright statement should appear. The word "copyright" is optional.

Copyright © 1999 Laura Howell and Michael Russell

Share. Please feel free to share copies of the commission with your friends.

Small. If we agree that you may post the artwork on a web page, please keep it SMALL (no larger than 400 pixels wide).

Style

If you chose to draw me or my friends, please draw me in your normal style. Of course, if you want to draw me "on model", that will be fine, too. Which approach you use is up to you.

Regardless of how you draw me or my friends, please ensure two things. (1) First, pay attention to the colours. My colour scheme is very specific and is part of my essence. (2) Second, the resulting picture should "look" like me. So, whether drawn from two head high (super deformed) to my normal four head high (cartoony) to six head high (human proportion), a casual observer should be able to say, "Hey, that's Vicki".

Expectation

My main expectation during the artwork project is communications! Please keep me informed on the progress. Please reply to my email queries. Please ask me questions if you are unsure about details.

Summary

If any of this confuses you, please ask me.
