History
Using animals to represent humans have been used in literature and artwork for ages. On this page, I've documented a short history of this usage.
Use of animals in Japanese literature
In ancient Japan there were sequential art stories referred to as The Animal Scrolls. These stories are considered one of the influences for the modern Japanese comic books (or manga). The stories were illustrated and used a sequential art style. The characters in the stories were parodies of the celebrities and leaders of that time -- nobles, priests, artisans, and merchants. The parodies represented these celebrities as animals. The animals stood on their hind legs, spoke, and wore clothing. The Animal Scrolls were very popular among the general population.
More information about The Animal Scrolls can be found in the book, Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics by Frederick L. Schodt.
